A lit window is the one Christmas decoration you enjoy from both sides: cosy from the sofa, and a small gift to everyone walking past in the dark. You don't need a house or a ladder for it; a windowsill and a socket (or a few batteries) are enough. Here are 8 Christmas window decoration ideas for 2026, plus a few tips to make them look good from the street.
1. Hang an animated light curtain
Smart curtain lights hang from the curtain rail or the top of the frame, and 400 LEDs turn the whole window into a moving picture: falling snow, a Christmas tree, Santa or your own message, picked in the phone app. The 2 × 2 m set suits most windows; the 3 × 3 m set is made for patio doors and wide picture windows. From the street the picture is seen from behind: scenes and patterns look right, but check that any text reads the right way round outside.

2. Show the Nativity for Advent
The same smart curtain can tell the Christmas story: a glowing Nativity under the Star of Bethlehem, herald angels or a line like “Joy to the World”. Change the scene through Advent, and let the timer switch it on in the evening and off at bedtime.

3. Candles on the windowsill, minus the flame
Candles in the window are an old Christmas welcome, but a real flame next to the curtains is a risk nobody needs. Flameless pillar candles flicker the same way, with no flame at all. Set the timer once: they switch off after 2 to 8 hours and come back on at the same time the next day, so the window glows when you come home.

Shown: flameless candles with remote, sets of three in white, ivory or smoke gray.
4. A little village on the sill
A row of light-up houses turns a plain windowsill into a snowy village street. They are 6 to 9 cm tall, run on the button batteries that come with them and need no cable, so you can line them up along the whole sill. In front of the curtain lights, the little houses stand out against the big picture behind them.

5. A lighted birch in the corner of the window
A white birch tree with warm fairy lights on every branch fills the corner of the windowsill with soft light, and it can stay up from the first frost to New Year. The 24-LED tree is about 60 cm tall and the 144-LED tree about 63.5 cm; both run on USB or batteries, and the branches bend into shape.

Shown: lighted birch tree, 24 or 144 warm white LEDs.
6. Spell a word in light
Stand light-up marquee letters on the sill to spell JOY, NOEL or your family name. Each letter is 22 cm tall with warm white LEDs and runs on two AA batteries, so there is no cable to hide. Turn them to face the street for passers-by, or into the room for yourself.

Shown: light-up marquee letters, sold one letter at a time.
7. Christmas cards across the window
Run a string of photo clip lights along the top of the window, or in two or three rows across it, and clip on this year's Christmas cards. They glow in the evening, and new cards join the line as they arrive. The string runs on a battery box, so you don't need a socket near the window.

Shown: photo clip string lights, 2 m, 5 m or 10 m with clear clips. More ideas: 8 ways to display Christmas cards.
8. Snowflakes on the wall beside it
A Christmas light projector throws slowly turning snowflakes, Santas and reindeer onto any pale surface. Glass doesn't hold a picture, so aim it at the wall around the window, a light-coloured blind or the ceiling; the further away it stands (about 1.5 to 5 m), the bigger the picture. Use a 5V/2A USB adapter, not a fast charger.

Tips for a window that glows from the street
- Measure first: the 2 × 2 m curtain suits most windows, the 3 × 3 m one patio doors and wide windows.
- Hang it without drilling, on the curtain rail, a tension rod or clear adhesive hooks: see how to hang curtain lights.
- Close the blind or the curtains behind the lights: against a dark background they stand out much more from outside.
- Cold windowsills often collect condensation, so keep battery boxes and power banks off a wet sill.
- Set the timers so everything comes on when it gets dark and goes off at bedtime, and look at it once from the street at dusk.
