Ugly Christmas Sweater Party Ideas 2026: 8 Ideas for the Tackiest Night of the Year

The rules of an ugly Christmas sweater party are simple: the worse the sweater, the better. Tinsel, pom-poms, bells and knitted reindeer are all welcome. The room should be just as cheerful as the guests, and that mostly comes down to light. Here are 8 ideas, from the invitation to the prize-giving, with the practical points at the end.

1. Pick the date and send the invite

In the US, the third Friday of December is National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day, which falls on 18 December in 2026, so plenty of parties land on that weekend. Any December evening works, though. Put the dress code in the invite in big letters, say there will be prizes, and ask guests who don't own a terrible sweater to make one: that's half the fun.

2. Light up a welcome sign

Spell UGLY, NOEL or the host's name in marquee letters by the door or on the snack table, so guests know they've come to the right place. Each letter is 22 cm tall, stands on its own and runs on batteries, so the sign can go anywhere, with no socket nearby. After the party, the same letters spell a name, LOVE or a date for the rest of the year.

3. Build a glowing backdrop

Every party needs a spot for photos. Hang LED curtain lights on a wall or in a window and use the app to write a message across them, like UGLY SWEATER PARTY or the date, or pick one of the animated Christmas scenes. Guests line up in front of it in their sweaters, and the photos look like they were taken at a proper event.

Shown: smart animated Christmas lights, 2 × 2 m or 3 × 3 m with 400 LEDs, controlled from the app.

4. Turn the living room into a dance floor

Dim the main lights and point a Christmas projector at the ceiling or a wall: snowflakes, reindeer and Santa drift slowly across the room and over the dancing guests. It needs no hooks and no ladder, just a USB adapter and somewhere to stand, 1.5 to 5 m from the wall.

5. Hand out masks for the group photo

For one photo the whole room will remember, slip a few guests a Snowmug face ski mask: a thin, stretchy balaclava printed edge to edge with a hyper-real old face, with one wide opening for the eyes. With ugly sweaters below and Walrus Walt, Toothless Ted and Smokey Sal on top, people really do look twice. After the party, it's a real ski mask that fits under most helmets.

6. Make an ugly sweater hall of fame

Take an instant photo of every guest as they arrive, or print a few phone pictures, and clip them to a string of photo clip lights on the wall. By the end of the evening you have a glowing gallery of terrible sweaters, and it's where everyone votes for the winner. Guests can take their photo home at the end.

7. Give the snack table some sparkle

Scatter mini disco balls between the cookies and the mulled wine, where they catch the light from the projector. For candlelight, use flameless candles: with tinsel, pom-poms and fluffy sweaters everywhere, it's one less thing to worry about, and one remote switches them all off at the end of the night.

8. Set up a DIY sweater station and the prizes

Put out a table with tinsel, pom-poms, felt shapes, little bells, safety pins and a glue gun for guests who turn up in a plain sweater, or who want to make theirs worse. Then hand out the prizes: ugliest sweater, best homemade, most festive, best group look. Small light-up gifts make good prizes; our Secret Santa gift ideas under $20 has eight of them.

Before the party: delivery, power and safety

  • Delivery: free tracked shipping, dispatched in 1 to 3 business days and delivered in 7 to 12. Order by 25 November for a party in mid-December, and by 1 December for Christmas.
  • Power: the marquee letters take 2 AA batteries each and the photo clip lights 3 AA batteries; the curtain lights and the projector run on USB (use a 5V/2A adapter for the projector, not a fast charger; adapters not included); each flameless candle takes 3 AAA batteries. Batteries are not included.
  • The mirror tiles on the disco balls are glass: hang or place them out of reach of small children and pets.
  • Keep lights away from heaters and the fireplace, and keep cables out of the way where people dance.
  • Returns: unused items in their original packaging can be returned within 30 days of delivery.
