Disco Ball Christmas Decor: 8 Sparkly Ideas for the Tree and New Year's Eve

Mini mirror disco ball ornaments on a Christmas tree, with a size chart

Mirror balls aren't only for the dance floor. Hung in a Christmas tree they catch every flicker of the lights and scatter little sparkles across the room, and on New Year's Eve the same balls move to the party table. Here are 8 ways to use mini disco balls from the first week of Advent to midnight on the 31st.

1. Mirror balls on the tree

Hang the 5 cm disco balls deep in the branches, close to the lights, so every ball throws little sparkles around the room as the lights flicker. A pack of 10 is enough to try the look on a small tree; on a bigger tree, add more where the light hits, or mix them with your usual baubles.

2. Disco balls and a velvet bow

A big velvet bow at the top and mirror balls through the branches is a simple pairing that works with any colour scheme. Let the bow's long streamers fall down the tree and hang the balls along them, so the velvet and the mirror tiles catch the same light.

3. More light to reflect

Mirror balls only sparkle when there's light to bounce, so the more light in the tree, the more they shine. Ribbon lights wrapped around the tree put the glow right next to the balls, and they run from a battery box, so no socket is needed by the tree.

4. A bowl on the coffee table

Not everything has to hang. A glass bowl or a tray of disco balls on the coffee table or the sideboard catches the lamplight all evening and takes a minute to set up. Tuck a few into a vase of branches for a quick centrepiece.

5. The New Year's Eve table

After Christmas the balls move straight to the party: scatter them between the glasses, the plates and the cake stands, not on the food itself, and they pick up the candlelight as midnight gets closer.

6. A mirror ball garland

Thread the hanging strings of a pack of 20 or 30 onto a length of ribbon, tie a knot after each ball, and you have a sparkling garland for the mantel, a doorway or a party backdrop.

7. Around the year in lights

On New Year's Eve, put a handful of disco balls around 2027 in marquee numbers on the drinks table. The warm bulbs bounce off the mirror tiles, and it makes a ready-made spot for photos at midnight.
